Nursery
Clas Description
There are one or two classes in Nursery, depending on need. Please see below for our expectations for the year ahead and some information about our curriculum.
The Nursery program follows the International School of Lusaka's Mission Statement and Philosophy. Children develop self awareness and become confident and independent. Play is an important aspect of Nursery and we aim to provide an attractive environment that will stimulate learning. Children are given the opportunity to investigate and experiment at their own pace and to their own interests. School is seen as an extension of home and it makes use of the cultural diversity present in the classroom as the basis for recognizing the values of each and every culture represented.
As adopted from the School Curriculum Assessment Association, "Nursery Educational Desirable Outcomes for Childrens' Learning", the desirable outcomes are goals for a child's learning before they enter formal education. The goals emphasize early literacy, numeracy and the development of personal and social skills and contribute to a child’s knowledge, understanding and skill sets. Presented as 6 areas of learning, they provide a foundation for later learning.
Personal and Social Development
These outcomes focus on children learning how to work, play, cooperate with others and function in a group beyond their family. They cover important aspects of personal, social, moral and spiritual development including the development of personal values and an understanding of self and others.
Language and Literacy
These outcomes cover important aspects of language development and provide the foundation of literacy. The outcomes focus on children developing competence in speaking and listening and in becoming readers and writers.
Mathematics
These outcomes cover important aspects of mathematical understanding and provide the foundation of numeric understanding. They focus on achievement through practical activities and ongoing understanding into the development of simple mathematical ideas.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
These outcomes focus on children’s developing knowledge and understanding of the environment, other people and features of the natural and man made world.
Unit of Inquiry
In keeping with in the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), Social Studies and Science will be taught within Units of Inquiry. These Units will run for approximately 8 weeks and will incorporate as many subjects as appropriate.

Personal Social and Physical Education (PSHE)
These outcomes focus on children’s developing physical control, mobility, awareness of space and manipulative skills in indoor and outdoor environment. They include establishing positive attitudes towards a healthy and active way of life.
Students move about the play space and freely practice throwing balls, balloons scarves, quoits in the air, and attempt to catch them. Students roll and throw balls/ balloons against a wall and make attempts to catch them on the rebound. In
swimming, students develop water confidence fundamentals through a series of varied activities in level one. The focus
will be on Stage One.
The PE Department would like to remind and encourage the Nursery students to come dressed in the recommended PE kit for PE lessons. As the season is getting hotter, it is important to bring in an extra water supply to school on PE days. Furthermore, it is mandatory for everyone to acquire the accepted ISL swimming costume unless otherwise
stated.
Creative Development and Art
These outcomes focus on the development of children’s imagination and their ability to communicate and to express ideas and feelings in creative ways.
1. Children explore sound and color, texture, shape, form and space in two dimensions.
2. They respond in a variety of ways to what they see, hear, smell, touch and feel.
3. Through art, music, dance, stories and imaginative play, they show an increasing ability to use their imagination to listen and to observe.
4. They use a widening range of materials, suitable tools, instruments and other resources to express ideas and to communicate their feelings.
Information and Communication Technology
They are introduced to technology through use of Learn Pads in classrooms and encouraged to use IT vocabulary, where appropriate, to support their learning.
Music
We introduce the children to simple songs that match their current speech patterns. The children play a variety of
instruments that foster the learner profile. The children dance and express themselves through actions to songs.
Zambian Studies
Lessons incorporate what is learned in class, using local vernacular. We consolidate and make terms familiar and fun to learn.
Library
Nursery students visit the library once in a week and they will have experiences with puppets, books and dramatic play
to tell stories. We encourage the children to develop a love of books and reading. They also learn how to turn the pages,
take care of a book and the location of picture books. Parents are welcome to borrow up to 5 books to read with their child for 2 weeks.
