The International School of Lusaka, founded in 1963, is one of the oldest international schools on the continent of Africa, and is currently the third largest such school in the Association of International Schools in Africa. There are over 700 students from over 60 different nationalities. The teaching staff consists of over 50 professional educators from 15 countries. The School is overseen by a Board of Governors, 9 of whom are elected by the ISL Association. The Association is composed of the parents of the students attending ISL and the professional teaching staff. The administration of the school is directed by the Head of School, who is supported by the Deputy Head of School, the Primary Principal, the Secondary School Principal and the Finance Manager.

The Primary School (Nursery up to Year 6) follows the Primary Years Programme as endorsed by the International Baccalaureate. The PYP supports the ISL belief that a child's development should not be simply classroom based and focused on academic welfare. Instead teachers and parents collectively need to foster the development of our children's social skills, physical and emotional well-being too. Along with the academic subjects Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies, all students have regular opportunities to participate in Ar, Music, Physical Education, Swimming Information TEchnology and a Modern Language. There is a school wide planned field trip schedule so that in their time at ISL, students might participate in the most that our host country has to offer in terms of outdoor education. We also offer vibrant after school activities programme ranging from various sports to arts, crafts and clubs.

The Secondary School programme offers a broad international curriculum in Years 7-9. The United Kingdom-based International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is a two year curriculum offered for Years 10-11. There is a separate English-as-a-Second Language Programme for those who require it and the School Counselor is available to assist with university admissions. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, or IB, which is arguably the premier college preparatory programme in the world, has been offered since the 1996 school year to years 12 (IB1) and 13 (IB2) ISL is the permanent test centre in Zambia for all American CEEB tests: SAT, TOEFL, GRE.
